Cultural places in the area of Sonderborg
Whether you’re into crazy concerts, experimental theater, movie classics, modern dance, ballet, shows, musicals, sport matches, festivals, modern art, events for children, or something completely different, Sonderborg offers all sorts of cultural life.
The Multicultural Center
The beautiful Multicultural Center lies at Sonderborg harbor and houses the Sonderborg library, the Art School of Southern Denmark, the German library and various cultural events and exhibitions. The newly renovated “Ewers Pakhus” houses the children’s library, while the adult’s section is on the ground floor along with a café.
Alsion
The Alsion Concert Hall in Sonderborg is one of Europe’s best concert halls for classical symphonic music. This is also the home of the Southern Jutland Symphony Orchestra. The concert hall is frequented by Danish and international star soloists, artists and musicians. Dance performances, musical shows and stand-up are regularly held at Alsion.
Sønderborghus
Sønderborghus is Sonderborg’s community house, which also serves as a venue for music, fairs and stand-up shows. In addition, you can participate in lots of creative activities and courses in e.g. raku, glass art and other crafts. Also, sign up for Family Saturdays, Baby Mondays or the Movie Club, which often shows interesting documentaries.
Skansen
Broager Sparekasse Skansen, also known as Dybbøl Hallerne – is mostly known as the home of the Handball men’s team SønderjyskE and their home games. Additionally, Skansen houses a café, a gym and sports halls, where you can participate in eg. badminton, handball and aerobic.
Mølleparken
During the summertime, there are plenty of outdoor concerts at Mølleparken in Sonderborg, where ‘Kultur i Syd’ presents a series of Danish and international names. There is always something for everyone, whether it is rock, pop or something totally different.
Augustiana Art Gallery and Art Park
Augustiana is a locally renowned art park and art hall, located in the beautiful castle park at Augustenborg Castle. The garden and Augustiana are definitely worth a visit, and the views of Augustenborg Fjord are unforgettable.
Sonderborg Theater
During the theater season, Sønderborg Theater has a wide repertoire for all age groups and all tastes. The Sonderborg Theater Association provides a wide selection of Denmarks’s tour performances – from large commercial shows to smaller, experimental performances – along with a wealth of concerts, lectures, stand-up and conferences. The theater also hosts the well-known Sønderborg Sommer Revy.
The Little Theater Gråsten
If you are into more intimate surroundings, there is also the Little Theater in Gråsten.
Sonderborg Music School
Sonderborg School of Music offers baby and children’s rhythmics for children aged 0-5 years. Subsequently, it is possible to attend the Musical Basic Course (MGK) or other courses. During the summer holidays, the Music School also offers classes for children from 2nd – 6th grade, and you do not need to have played an instrument before to participate. Als Performance Akademi is for those who dream of becoming an actor or performing artist. Here you will find dance, singing and drama lessons. The music school is also affiliated with Billedskolen Nordals.
South Jutland's Dance Academy
South Jutland’s Dance Academy offer professional ballet tutoring on all levels with children from the age of 5. The Academy has approx. 120 students.
Cultural sites in the smaller towns and villages
In many smaller towns and villages you can find exciting cultural sites, e.g. Nordborghus in Nordborg, Ahlmannsparken in Graasten and Broagerhuset in Broager.
