Birgitte Zacho is back at Sonderborg Folkeuniversitet with her lively and educational art lectures. In the fall of 2026, she will talk about Spanish art.

The Spanish art scene has produced some of the greatest masters in art history.

The 17th century begins with the dramatic realism of the Seville School, influenced by the Italian Caravaggio, and where artists such as Zurbarán, Ribera and Velázquez paint intense religious images. As court painter to Philip IV, Diego Velázquez puts Spanish art on the world map in the 17th century. His complex portrait of a princess Las Meninas will become a major work that subsequent generations must relate to.

The 1700th century is dominated by foreign artists until Goya enters the scene and, in both painting and graphics, depicts and weaves together his time.

As the next century draws to a close, a new Spanish star shines in the sky. Picasso not only takes on his own time, but reinterprets the entire history of Spanish art and redefines the rules of the game.
