Mozart and Berlioz

Mozart and Berlioz

Mozart's Symphony No. 40 is probably the most well-known – including from the blockbuster film Amadeus. It starts off playfully with its iconic opening theme, but the dark undertone and troubled themes add passion and sophistication. It's Mozart at his best.

Gemma New comes from New Zealand and is the chief conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, but in recent years she has also established a massive career in the USA and Europe with guest conducting appearances with the largest orchestras, such as the New York Philharmonic and the BBC Philharmonic.

She is known for her empathetic conducting and sense of detail and sound in orchestral playing.

After the break, Berlioz's Harold in Italy is on the program. It is a symphonic journey through Italy, where the viola is a poetic traveler, wandering through changing landscapes and scenes from Italy. The work contains everything from melancholic nature descriptions and lyrical solos to colorful crowds.

The soloist, Sara Ferrández, is known for her charismatic stage presence, which gives the viola a rare solo impact.
